Chapter 1
Abolish – to formally put an end to a system
Benevolent – well meaning and kindly
Cynical – concerned only with one’s own interests and disregarding appropriate standards
Dissentient – in opposition to a majority or official opinion
Enmity – the feeling of being actively opposed or hostile to someone or something
Ensconce – to settle in a comfortable, safe, or secret place

Acute – mentally alert and awake
Conceive – form or devise (a plan or idea)
Cryptic – having a meaning that is mysterious or obscure
Indefatigable – (of a person or their efforts) persisting tirelessly
Maxim – a short, pithy statement expressing a generalization
Shirk – avoid or neglect (a duty or responsibility)
Chapter 5
Disinterred – something taken out of a tomb or grave
Innovate – make changes in something established
Liable – likely to do or to be something
Manifest – to reveal; to show itself plainly
Pretext – a reason given that is not the real reason
Procure – to obtain (something), especially with care or effort
Restive – restless; unable to keep still or silent
Chapter 7
Capitulate - surrender to an opponent
Countenance - a person's face or facial expression
Cower - to crouch down in fear
Incite - to encourage or stir up (unlawful behavior)
Infanticide - the killing of an infant, especially one's own child
Retribution - punishment as revenge for a wrongdoing

Accumulate - to gradually gather or acquire
Complicity - the act(s) or state of being involved with others in illegal doings
Demeanor - outward behavior or bearing
Knacker - a person who slaughters animals
Spontaneous - resulting from a sudden inner impulse
Superannuated - obsolete through age

Apathy – lack of interest or enthusiasm
Gambol – to run or jump playfully
Preeminent – better than all others
Tormentors – people who inflict suffering on others

Contemptible – considered low or worthless; despicable
Ignominious – deserving public disgrace or shame
Impromptu – done without being planned or organized
Perpetual – never ending or changing
Tractable – easy to control or influence

Arable – (of land) used or suitable for growling crops
Grudged – a persistent feeling of ill will or resentment
Indignation – anger provoked by what is perceived as unfair
Intermediary – a person who acts as a link between people
Malignity – evil in nature or effect; malevolent
Repose – a state of rest, sleep, or tranquility

Censure - to express severe disapproval of someone or something
Conciliatory - intended or likely to placate or pacify
Machinations - a plot or scheme
Skulking - moving stealthily or furtively
Unscathed - without suffering any injury, damage or harm
Chapter 10
Inebriate- to make (someone) drunk; to intoxicate
Morose - sullen and ill-tempered
Prosperous - successful in material terms; flourishing financially
Subsist - to support oneself, especially at a minimal level
Taciturn - reserved or uncommunicative in speech; saying little
Tyrannical - exercising power in a cruel or arbitrary way
